Protracted bacterial bronchitis in children remains a lesser-known pathology. Its true prevalence is unknown and it is possible that many cases of the disease remain undiagnosed. In some children, protracted bacterial bronchitis persists into adulthood and may be associated with the development of other chronic respiratory diseases.
Aim – to summarize modern scientific and informational data from literature sources in order to help clinicians timely diagnose and prescribe treatment for protracted bacterial bronchitis in children.
This work utilizes the published results of modern scientific studies on the diagnosis and treatment of protracted bacterial bronchitis in children. This review is a synthesis of the reviewed sources and the expert opinion of the authors. The current definition of protracted bacterial bronchitis is presented, as well as risk factors for its development in children with acute respiratory viral infections at the stage of disease progression. The stages of the diagnostic search and treatment are highlighted.
Conclusions. Protracted bacterial bronchitis determines the trajectory of bronchopulmonary diseases and health throughout life. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment are among the undisputed priorities in the field of health care for children and adults.
The authors declare no conflict of interest.
