prospective, open, multicenter, previous study, 101 women participated (according to the protocol, from 16 to 61 years old) with a confirmed diagnosis of vulvovaginitis, which includes single or mixed infections (Candida albicans, Trichomonas vaginalis and / or Gardnerelia vaginalis). Fenticonazole nitrate (1 g) in the form of vaginal ovules was injected once on the first and fourth day. Efficiency (continuous phase contrast microscopy of vaginal smears and / or microbiological culture) on the 8th day of treatment was 90% (Candida albicans – 26/29; p <0.001), 70 % (Trichomonas vaginalis – 7 / 10, p = 0.161), 67% (Gardnerella vaginalis, 22/33; p <0.009) and 45% (mixed infections, 13/29; p = 0.001). After 28 days, relapses were: 0% for candidiasis and trichomoniasis, 27% (6/22) for vaginal gardnerella and 23% (3/13) for mixed infections.
In general, the destruction of pathogenic microorganisms was achieved in 67% of the participants of the study, the relapse rate was only in 16%. The total score for symptom assessment decreased from 7 (baseline) to 1.7 (day 8) and 0.71 (day 28) – p <0.001. The treatment was well tolerated by patients and was safe. Results from the previous study show that intravaginal administration of fenticonazole nitrate (1 g) for two days is an acceptable primary treatment for vulvovaginitis.
Key words: vulvovaginitis, vaginal infections, fenticonazole nitrate, treatment.
