State of the cytokine system in infants suffering from purulent meningitis

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and diagnostic value levels of cytokines in serum and cerebrospinal fluid in purulent meningitis in neonates and infants.

Patients and methods. We observed 80 children in the first year of life with meningitis.

Results. It was found that meningitis in the majority infants suffering from purulent meningitis developed on the background of aggravated obstetric and gynecological history in mothers. The levels of cytokines (IL-1β, IL-4, TNF-a) in the blood and in the cerebrospinal fluid are more accurate indicators of the inflammatory activity than laboratory data (cytosis, protein).

Conclusions. IL-1β, IL-4, TNF-a allow to identify the severity of the inflammatory response and also are good criteria of completeness cure the patient and can reflect the outcome of the disease.
