Risk factors associated with perinatal pathology in preterm infants with gestational age 340/7–366/7 weeks

Introduction. Late preterm infants (who were born at 340/7 to 366/7 week gestational age) are morphologically and functionally immature. Adverse conditions of intrauterine foetal development can lead to different perinatal pathologies in late preterm infants (LPIs).
Objective — to identify risk factors associated with perinatal pathology in late preterm infants (LPIs) to create the principal directions of its prevention and future analysis.
Material and methods. 158 mother-child pairs were included to the study and divided into 2 groups: 97 LPIs with perinatal pathology with their mothers, and the group of comparison comprised 61 relatively healthy LPIs with their mothers. Maternal age, chronic diseases, reproductive history, pathology of pregnancy, complications and mode of delivery were analysed.
Results. We found out significant differences between the groups concerning such indicators as preeclampsia (p<0.001), placental insufficiency (p<0.001), polyhydramnios (p=0.012), foetal distress (p<0.001) and caesarean section (p<0.001). We also found out close to significant differences in the following parameters: first pregnancy (p=0.082), primipara (p=0.072), oligohydramnios (p=0.053), and umbilical cord pathology (p=0.078).
Conclusions. Preeclampsia, placental insufficiency, polyhydramnios, foetal distress and caesarean section can be risk factors associated with perinatal pathology in LPIs with gestational age 340/7–366/7 weeks.
