Palliative care: problems of incurable patients’ families

Aim of study.

Materials and methods. The sociological survey has been performed by interviewing 146 incurable and severely diseased patients’ family members at different in-patient health care facilities in Ivano-Frankivsk (Western Ukraine): Regional clinical centre of palliative care (Hospice), Regional oncology hospital, Central clinical city hospital. 
 

Results. There was established that the main burden of caring for the terminally ill falls on the shoulders of women (70.5% of respondents) of working age (91.8%). The appearance of incurable ill family member impacts on worsening quality of life his/her relatives due to destitution (level of material well-being of the respondents fell 1.5-2 times), limiting social activity (in 72.5% of cases), deterioration of family relationships (51.4%) and psychological discomfort for fear getting sick (77.1%), uncertainty in the future (76.4%), anxiety (67.1%), dissatisfaction with their health (61.0%) and others. There was displayed the high level of family needs to help care for the terminally ill family member (92.4%), special knowledge of the care of seriously ill (63.2%) and appropriate training (53.5%). 
 

Conclusions. In order to satisfy the terminally ill patients’ relatives needs of to help care, special knowledge of the seriously ill care and appropriate training, as well as the formation of their skills of combating and facilitate psychological suffering the special trainings for incurable patients’ family members should be organized in facilities and units of palliative care on the principles multidisciplinary approach.
