Features and manifestations of school bullying on the model of the Odessa region

Purpose: to explore the features, appearance and inform scholars about the problem of bullying among pupils of two secondary schools in the city of Odessa.

 

Patients and methods: in an anonymous survey after an informed agreement it was attended by pupils of 5–11 classes of two secondary schools in Odessa. The sample was random included 615 persons — 283 boys and 332 girls. There were children according to the questionnaire, developed by the Centre at Trinity College — Dublin (Ireland). The statistical analysis of the data was performed using STATISTICA 7.0 packages and inet!calculation SISA (Simple Interactive Statistical Analysis). The significance of different manifestations of bullying among boys, girls evaluated the results of the Feature Selection and Variable Filtering method — Modul Data mining.

 

Results: it has been established that there are age and gender features in forms and manifestations of school bullying and social attitude to the problem. Gossips (c2 — 20.3, p=0.00003), insults (c2 — 19.0, p=0.00007) and threats (c2 — 11.5, p=0.003) prevail as forms of school bullying among girls. Among boys the most tipical forms of school violence are: fight (c2 — 25.7, p=0.000007), insults (c2 — 19.0, p=0.00007) and threats (c2 — 11.5, p=0.003 ).

 

Conclusions: Regional and national system for identifying, recording and counter school bullying should be improved and developed on the basis of further studies that confirm understanding of the nature and prevalence of the problem, as well as by use of modern methods of team decision making.
