Considering the significant changes in approaches to the prevention of cervical cancer that have taken place over the past decades, the article considers the concept of primary, secondary and tertiary levels of preventive measures on cancer pathology in general, the nature and purpose of screening studies, the requirements to diagnostic tests that can be used as a screening.

The modern approaches to cervical screening as a key component of secondary prevention of cervical cancer, the features of existing screening programs based on the initial determination of highly oncogenic strains of human papillomavirus virus alone and in combination with cytological research are considered in detail.
