Clinical and laboratory characteristics of lactose intolerance in infants

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of lactose intolerance in infants

Objective: To explore the clinical features and diagnostic value of laboratory studies lactose intolerance in breastfed infants.


Materials and methods. 271 child aged 1 to 6 months who were breastfed. All children conducted general clinical and laboratory examinations, which included blood count, urine and stool examination, stool pH and carbohydrates, ultrasound examination of the abdomen, a hydrogen breath test with a load of lactose.


Research results. Clinical manifestations lactose intolerance in breastfed infants — intestinal colic, flatulence, anxiety, diarrhea, sleep disorders are not specific for this group of patients. However, the trend was found to average severity of clinical symptoms, measured at point scale in children with lactose intolerance, also acidic pH of feces. High sensitivity for lactose intolerance, showed the study of carbohydrates in feces.


Conclusion. Lactose intolerance in breastfed infants, the average severity of intestinal colic, bloating, anxiety, diarrhea, fecal acidic pH, the presence of carbohydrates in feces.
