Assessment of quality of counseling women about weight gain during pregnancy

The aim of the study is the evaluation of quality of antenatal counseling women about gestational weight gain based in questionnaires for patients and obstetricians.

Material and methods. The study involved 117 women in full-term pregnancy. There were 81 normal-weight women before pregnancy, 26 women with increased BMI and 10 low-weight pregnant. 42 obstetricians of antenatal clinics also took part in the study. Questionnaires included the following directions: carrying doctors consulting about weight gein during pregnancy, advices on changing nutrition behavior, discuss maternal and fetus complications associated with abnormal weight gain, encourage physical activity, information on postpartum weight loss and the patient feelings about doctors advice.

Results and conclusions. In normal-weight women the pathological weight gain was higher than in women with overweight and obesity (p <0.01). Prevention of abnormal weight gain during pregnancy is the most actively conducted among women with overweight and obesity as in patients with normal and low weight. We identified insufficient attention to individual weight gain accoding BMI, a low level of knowledge as patients and professionals on nutrition and physical activity during pregnancy. Questions postpartum weight loss, according to 90.5±4.5% of obstetricians and 94.0±2.2% of women not discussed at all. Positive attitude to the doctor’s advice about healthy eating and exercise during pregnancy was found in 64±4.4% of women. Prevention of pathological gestational weight gain is a very important and very necessary part of antenatal care.
