Objective: to evaluate parameters of PG in infants with extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR), very low birth weight (VLBW), extremely low birth weight (ELBW); to identify significant difference between PG in infants with VLBW and ELBW, between boys and girls.
Patients and methods. 126 infants with VLBW (n=92) and ELBW (n=34), among them 46% boys and 54% girls; PG was evaluated according to gestational
age at birth, at admission to the special care nursery and at hospital discharge.
Results. In both groups of infants with VLBW and ELBW was detected EUGR between birth and discharge (p<0.05). At discharge EUGR (3 parameters together less than 10th percentage) were significantly more often (p=0.005) in ELBW (70.59% vs. 38.04%). Normal PG (3 parameters together) at discharge (38–40 weeks gestation) had only 28.26% infants with VLBW and 11.76% infants with ELBW. Boys at discharge had significantly better PG than girls: normal head circumference (69% vs. 36.8%) (p=0.001). Extrauterine growth restriction (3 parameters less than 10th percentage) had 31% of boys and 60.3% of girls (p=0.005).
Conclusion. Extrauterine growth restriction among infants with VLBW and ELBW significantly increase from birth till discharge. Infants with ELBW as well as girls are in the group of higher risk for developing EUGR.
Key words: postnatal growth, extrauterine growth restriction, very low birth weight, extremely low birth weight.
