Ambulatory care of vomiting and nausea in pregnancy

Melashchenko S. G., Rud’ V. A.

Vinnitsa national medical University M. I. Pirogov

The article reviews the management of emesis (hyperemesis) gravidarum in outpatient option. The algorithm of non-drug treatment and pharmacotherapy based on adaptation of British clinical guidelines «Nausea/vomiting in pregnancy, 2013» from the «Clinical Knowledge Summaries» (CKS) prepared by NICE. The strategy of increasing intensity of therapy (step-up) to achieve the optimal treatment option is proposed: non-drug (rest, dietary changes, P6 acupressure) – OTC medications (ginger extract, pyridoxine) – antihistamines (promethazine, doxylamine) – antiemetics related to dopamine/serotonine-receptors (metoclopramide, ondansetron, prochlorperazine).

Key words: hyperemesis gravidarum, ginger extract, pyridoxine, antiemetics.
