Obesity risk factors in children of the Odessa region

Objective: to study obesity risk factors in children of the Odessa region, and to develop recommendations for prevention obesity in the child population. 
 

Patients and methods. During the 2003–2011yy. on the basis of a specialized department of the Odessa Regional Children's Hospital, the Regional Children's Consultative clinic has been examined 144 children (78 girls and 66 boys) in the age 3–17 years with clinically confirmed diagnosis of obesity and 48 healthy children of the same age as the comparison group (control group). Criteria for inclusion in the study were: exogenous constitutional obesity, hypothalamic obesity, age older than 3 years and the ability to give informed consent. Exclusion criteria were: syndrome/Cushing's disease, Turner syndrome, Noonan syndrome and refusing to give informed consent. Using standardized protocols, children and parents, and family members were interviewed in accordance with the developed questionnaire. For estimation of the relative risk were used monovariant and multivariate logistic regression analysis and its interpretation with the calculation of odds ratios and 95% confidence interval. 
 

Results. Prognostically significant complexes of obesity risk factors in children were as follows: hereditary, including strong family heredity of obesity, hypertension diseases, type 2 diabetes, the reproductive system disorders, and medical, including combined mellitus of the I and II terms of pregnancy, powerless labor, low birth weight at birth (less than 2800 g) and artificial feeding during the 1st year of life. 
 

Conclusions. For identification of the patients with an increased risk of obesity and the possible formation of an unfavorable course of obesity can be informative analysis of geniology and refinement of perinatal medical history of the child.
