Objective: to study social, medical, obstetrics and gynecological anamnesis, the course of pregnancy and delivery in mothers of newborns with VLBW and ELBW; to define main perinatal pathology in kids with VLBW and ELBW.
Patients and methods. Social, medical, obstetrics and gynecological anamnesis, the course of pregnancy and delivery studied in mothers of newborns with VLBW (n=92) and ELBW (n=34); main perinatal pathology defined using medical documentation.
Results. Intrauterine development of kids with VLBW and ELBW occurred under unfavourable conditions – 62.7% of mothers had chronic somatic illnesses. 52.4% of mothers had extragenital pathology, 27% – genital pathology, 16.7% – combined extrauterine and genital pathology. In comparison with kids with VLBW, kids with ELBW had more cases (p<0,05) of perinatal pathology of central nervous system, auditory analyzer, required long treatment in neonatal intensive care units with more frequent and longer mechanical ventilation due to congenital pneumonia, more frequent blood transfusions, surgical treatment (mainly retinal laser coagulation).
Conclusion. Main perinatal pathology in kids with VLBW and ELBW is central nervous system damage, perinatal infection with development of congenital pneumonia, bacterial sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, which required long treatment in neonatal intensive care unit using mechanical ventilation; increased risk of developing chronic diseases of pulmonary system, visual and auditory analyzers, central nervous system.
Key words: newborns, mothers, very low birth weight (VLBW), extremely low birth weight (ELBW), premature newborns, perinatal pathology, extragenital pathology, genital pathology.
