Vitamins are one of the indispensable (essential) micronutrients. The number of children with varying degrees of vitamin and mineral deficiency is continuously increasing. Subclinical course of vitamin deficiency is extremely rarely diagnosed by paediatricians and general practitioners due to the lack of characteristic symptoms. However, one can not underestimate this condition, which is the first stage of hypovitaminosis. Among different vitamin deficiencies, the modern scientific data specifically highlights the role of vitamin D and its deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency has pandemic nature to date and is a crucial issue for both the child population and adults, especially older persons. Prevention of vitamin deficiency, especially vitamin D deficiency, the individual selection of vitamin supplements should be a key priority for paediatricians, as well as for adult doctors.
Key words: children, vitamins, vitamin deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, prevention, correction.
