Placenta praevia is an anomaly of the placenta placement when it is secured in the lower uterine segment. At the same time one or the other part of the placenta is in the internal pharynx of the uterus and is blocking partially or completely the internal pharynx of the uterus. After 12 weeks of pregnancy, the neck begins to expand gradually and to form a lower segment, which reaches 10 cm in height at full-term pregnancy. Therefore, suture of the cervix in case of central placenta praevia should reduce the risk of preterm birth. The aim of the study is to analyse the effect of imposing circular seam on the cervix withthe mersilene thread in the case of central placenta praevia that was diagnosed with help ultrasound investigation from 20 weeks of pregnancy. This method should be compared with conservative therapy.

Patients and methods. On the basis of the Kiev maternity hospital No. 5 in 2011–2015 it was made a retrospective analysis of 167 cases of central placenta praevia that were diagnosed with help ultrasoundinvestigation in the period after the 20th week of gestation. Pregnant women were divided into two random groups: group I consisted of 83 women who had the conservative therapy; group II consisted of 84 women which had been imposed the circular seam on the cervix withthe mersilene thread in the period from 20th to 28th week of gestation.

Results. For the first group it was observed that weight of the new-borns averaged 2320±200 grams; gestational age at childbirth was 22–38 weeks (mean 33.4 weeks).

For the second group it was observed that weight of the new-borns averaged 2910±200 grams; gestational age at childbirth was 29–38 weeks (mean 36.2 weeks).

Conclusions. Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of imposing circular seam on the cervix withthe mersilene thread.

Key words: central placenta praevia, circular seam on the cervix with the mersilene thread, premature birth, bleeding with subsequent transfusion of blood components.
