Possibilities of music therapy in palliative medicine

The purpose of this integrative review was to determine the possibilities of practical application of music therapy in the comprehensive palliative care according to the analysis of scientific publications over the past five years using Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed. The analysis showed the significant pharmacotherapy limitation of hospice and palliative patients due to the lack of their efficacy, frequent side effects and contraindications. Given the fact that the main mechanisms of music impact on the human organism are realized through the emotional state and nervous system, music therapy is used increasingly frequently in palliative care. Experimental studies demonstrate the efficacy and safety of music therapy as a means of control the psychoemotional state. The ability of music therapy to suppress pathological adrenergic influences, which contribute to the stabilization of hemodynamics and reduce the myocardial oxygen demand, is proved. Relaxing, sedative and analgesic effects of music allow reducing the psychotropic and analgesic drug dosage in severely ill patients. The accumulated music therapy positive experience in various diseases demonstrates the great potential and deserves the widest use in practice of palliative care institutions.
