Acute tonsillopharyngitis (ATP) is an acute infectious inflammatory disease of mucous membrane and lymph structures of oropharyngeal cavity. The term is catch1all word for designation of the acute inflammation of the palatal tonsil (acute tonsillitis) and acute inflammation of the posterior pharyngeal wall (acute pharyngitis), due to the fact that usually both sites are involved in inflammation process. Acute tonsillopharyngitis is a polyaethological disease and requires obligatory aetiological clarification. The administration of systemic antibiotic therapy for acute tonsillitis is indicated only if bacterial aetiology of the disease is proven. In acute and exacerbation of chronic pharyngitis, not associated with severe general status deterioration, symptomatic treatment may be sufficient. Non-complicated pharyngitis usually does not require systematic antibiotics. Under these circumstances, topical antimicrobial therapy is justified instead of systemic one. All the requirements for topical therapy of ATP conforms with the drug "Hexoral®", antimicrobial effect of which is associated with the oxidative reaction inhibition of the metabolism of microorganisms (thiamine antagonist). Its efficiency and safety for the topical therapy of ATP has been proved by numerous clinical studies. Adverse reactions are possible.
Key words: tonsillopharyngitis, treatment, antibiotic therapy, topical therapy, hexetidine.
