Features of upper respiratory tract lesions in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes

Objective: explore the lesions features of upper respiratory tract in children and adolescents with DM-1. 
 

Materials and methods. During the period of 2013–2015, using modern diagnostic methods, a comprehensive survey of 378 children and adolescents with diabetes, aged 3 to 18 was conducted. The main group included 313 children with DM-1 with diagnosed pathology in otolaryngology, the control group consisted of 65 children and adolescents with DM-1 without concomitant ENT diseases. 
 

Results. The highest proportion of pathology in otolaryngology observations in the main group was found in the presence of chronic diseases lymphoepithelial structures of throat. In children with DM-1 diagnosed chronic tonsillitis was diagnosed — 33%, pharyngitis — 9%, inflammatory disease of the nasal pharynx (chronic adenoiditis, adenoids) — 9% of patients. Pathology of the nose and paranasal sinuses among the main group was found in 47% of children with DM-1. This distortion of the nasal septum with violation of nasal breathing was noted in 32% of patients, acute rhinosinusitis — 7%, recurrent nosebleeds (epistaxis) — 8%. 
 

Conclusion. Conducted clinical and laboratory research confirms high-percentage lesions of upper respiratory tract in children, patients with DM-1and demonstrates the need for early diagnosis of diseases of the upper respiratory tract and development of effective schemes for complex treatment.
