Objective. Examination of the volume of red blood cells transfusion of donor during the arterial switch operation in newborn accompanied by deterioration of the short-term results of treatment.

 

Patients and methods. A total of 251 newborns operated during the neonatal period for the reason of the transposition of the great vessels (TGS) were included to the study. For determination of the influence of the number of transfused blood on the short-term results of treatment, patients were divided into four groups depending on the number of transfused blood components. The number of transfused donor red blood cells during the switch operation and also the duration of artificial lung ventilation (ALV) and stay in the Intensive care unit (ICU) were analyzed.

 

Results. It is found that the duration of artificial lung ventilation was significantly increased for the period of application of 70 ml of donor red blood cells during the cardiac surgery. Length of stay in the ICU was significantly increased by transfusion of donor red blood cells in excess of 110 ml.

 

Conclusions. The obtained data can be used in predicting the short-term results of the treatment of infants with TGS.
