Short Bowel Syndrome in children as a surgical, general medical and social problem

The treatment analysis of 10 patients in Odesa Regional Clinical Children's Hospital with different surgical pathology of intestine that led to the development of Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) was performed. There were treated 2 children with total agangliosis of intestine, 2 – with neurodisplasya of intestine, 2 – with megacystis microcolon intestinal hypoperistalsis syndrome, 1 – with multiply atresia of small intestine together with agangliosis of large intestine. All children were operated on with the development of SBS. The challenges of radical surgical treatment of SBS and infusion therapy are described in the article. The terms of anatomic and functional SBS are proposed. The main directions of health and social care to these patients are identified.
