Rehabilitation treatment of early stage idiopathic scoliosis in teen school-aged children

Objective: to study the rehabilitation treatment efficacy in teen school-aged children with initial stages of idiopathic scoliosis (IS), with additional involvement of kinesio taping and taking into account the aggravation of the disease with osteopenia.
Material and methods. We examined and evaluated clinical and functional status of 134 teen school-aged children with idiopathic scoliosis I-II grades. During one year, the children were followed-up and received rehabilitation treatment in outpatient departments.
Results. It was shown that osteopenia significantly deteriorates the clinical and functional status, which turned out in different structural relations of research indicators (age, duration of illness, the Cobb angle of spine on X-ray, T-densitometry criteria, pain assessment according to the visual analogue scale) with other indicators. It was proved that the use of kinesio taping contributed to more pronounced as compared to the control, improvement of the biomechanical status of spine by goniometrical parameters (p<0.01), optimizing the biochemical parameters that characterize the connective tissue and bone status, leading to statistically significant improvement of clinical and functional status of children with a pain reduction in 81.08% cases (p<0.001), the restoration of their social activity – 81.08% (p<0.01).
Conclusions. Rehabilitation treatment of teen school-aged children with IS I-ІІ grades with the inclusion of kinesio taping is more effective, than the use of standard rehabilitation treatment, including in the association with osteopenia.
